Ethical and Authorship Considerations
Authorship
The NZMSJ adheres to the definition of authorship as per the ICMJE. The NZMSJ asks that submitting authors ensure all individuals who have made substantial contributions to the work, as per the following criteria, are listed as authors.
Plagiarism
NZMSJ checks every submission for plagiarism using CrossRefs Similarity Checker. NZMSJ reserves the right to refuse to publish articles deemed to be of high risk for plagiarism.
Conflicts of Interest
A conflict of interest exists when professional judgement concerning a primary interest may be influenced by a secondary interest. Identifiable conflicts of interest include, but not limited to the following: financial relationships, personal relationships or rivalries, academic competition, and intellectual beliefs. Please ensure the following three items from all authors are declared in the NZMSJ manuscript cover sheet and manuscript submission.
Ethical Approval
NZMSJ is committed to upholding best practices in ethical standards, human and animal rights in research. These include but are not limited to the right to informed consent, confidentiality and protecting the rights of vulnerable populations. Authors must ensure that research has been conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki and appropriate national ethical standards. Manuscripts of research conducted with human participants will not be considered for publication by NZMSJ if appropriate ethical approval has not been obtained and written consent has been obtained by participants. Statements indicating that
We require that ethics committee approval be obtained and explicitly stated upon submission to work to NZMSJ on the NZMSJ Manuscript Cover Sheet and within the manuscript itself. This should include, clearly stated, the name of the committee from which ethical approval was obtained and ethics approval number. Work conducted on human subjects must include the requirement for written informed consent to be obtained in the ‘Methods’ section.
Patient Consent
Authors submitting a case report, must ensure that individual patient consent has been obtained prior to submission, and documented in the NZMSJ Manuscript cover sheet. Where patient consent has been obtained, this should be indicated in the manuscript. Any identifiable information must be anonymised or removed to ensure patient anonymity is maintained.
